Rolling Hills
by Sergey Cherep
There are landscapes that make you want to stop everything and simply disappear into them. Rolling Hills is one of those paintings. Sergey Cherep fills this monumental 60" × 60" oil canvas with a sweeping Tuscan-inspired panorama of extraordinary richness and depth — rolling fields of fiery red, harvest gold, and deep forest green undulate across the entire composition in rhythmic, tactile waves, each furrow and terrace built up in thick impasto that catches and holds light in constantly shifting ways. At the heart of it all, a small cluster of white-walled, terracotta-roofed buildings nestles quietly into the hillside, connected to the foreground by a pale winding road that curves through the landscape with the unhurried grace of a place that has never been in a hurry. Dark rounded trees punctuate the middle ground like sentinels, their deep greens a perfect foil to the blazing warmth surrounding them. Above everything, a vast cobalt sky filled with magnificent rolling clouds completes a composition of genuine grandeur — the kind of sky that makes the world feel both enormous and intimately knowable at the same time. Cherep's largest and most immersive landscape format, Rolling Hills commands any wall it inhabits with the full force of his Post-Impressionist vision. Signed by the artist.
