Painter · Post-Impressionist · Storyteller Artist Biography Sergey Cherep was born on January 24, 1969 in Leningrad — the city the world now calls St. Petersburg. His earliest years were defined not by a paintbrush, but by survival. At the age of three, he contracted meningitis and was left paralyzed, unable to walk or speak. For years he attended a school for children with disabilities, and it was there, in those quiet hours, that he discovered painting. It gave him a voice before words returned to him. By the age of eight, his gift had been recognized and he was enrolled in a dedicated school for young artists. He went on to study at the prestigious Serovo Art Institute, where he immersed himself in the full breadth of classical training — European art history, portraiture, still life, sculpture, photography, printing processes, and restoration. The curriculum was exacting and the teachers demanding. “There was no freedom,” Sergey recalls. “There was no such thing as abstract — it was considered very Western and evil.” Russia went with talent, and Sergey had it in abundance. He graduated in 1988, just as Glasnost was beginning to crack open Soviet society. But freedom on the streets was illusory — to sell his cityscapes in oil, Sergey was forced to surrender 70 percent of every sale to organized crime that controlled the art trade. He was a trained artist with nothing to show for it. The Journey to America In May 1992, with a visa secured through a chance encounter with an American visitor, a 22-year-old Sergey Cherep boarded a plane for Atlanta, Georgia. He spoke no English. He knew almost no one. He left behind his family, his language, and the only world he had ever known. He found a room through a Russian connection tied to Emory University, and he found work cleaning bathrooms and collecting trash at the IRS building for $150 a week. In the evenings, he painted. He learned English the only way he could — by listening to conversations through the walls of a government building and by smuggling a Russian-English dictionary into the restroom to decipher the newspaper, word by word. The breakthrough came quietly, in a cafeteria. His manager had glimpsed his paintings and, moved by what he saw, helped organize a small show in the IRS building’s lunch room. Sergey sold three paintings that day, paid in cash. Soon after, a local frame shop owner offered him wall space and the chance to show his work. At one of those early shows, he sold a single canvas for $1,000 — more than he earned in two months of cleaning. A Vision Transformed The year 1994 changed everything. Attending the World Cup in California, Sergey made his way to Napa Valley — and the landscape unmade him. The rolling vineyards, the golden light, the lush saturated color of a world so different from Russia’s muted realism struck him like a revelation. He returned to his canvas a different painter. Gone was the careful, dutiful realism of his training. In its place came something vivid and joyful — a Post-Impressionist vision fired by the spirit of Van Gogh, built on bold primaries, expressive impasto, and a palette that seemed to radiate from within the canvas itself. “My paintings are like fairy tales,” he explains. “A dream place. I don’t see things as realistic. I allow the fantastic to happen. The bold, unrealistic colors and expressive brushstrokes of my predecessors are my tool — I try to bring a three-dimensional feeling out from the paintings by using color, perspective, and thick texture. Anything can motivate me: sun, fruits, aspens, scents, or even colors.” A Life Built Together At a Christmas party in December 1995, Sergey met Renee — and his world shifted again, this time for the better. Their partnership became the engine of everything that followed: his talent and her business acumen, working in concert. They took a booth at an art trade show in New York, where Sergey sold $20,000 of work in a single weekend. Galleries followed. Recognition followed. Together, Sergey and Renee have built not just a career but a life of shared purpose — raising a family, sustaining a studio practice, and bringing the gift of Sergey’s vision to collectors and admirers across the world. Process

THE PAINTING PROCESS Sergey Cherep begins every painting long before paint touches canvas. He rises at 6:30 each morning and sketches — sometimes for hours, working through composition after composition until the structure feels right. He produces between 500 and 800 sketches a year, and from those, roughly 300 original canvases. For Sergey, the drawing is where the painting is decided. "Eighty percent of successful painting is composition," he says. Everything else follows from that. "My paintings are like fairy tales. A dream place. I don't see things as realistic — I allow the fantastic to happen." When the composition is set, Sergey moves to the canvas — and he starts in darkness. A black ground is laid down first, creating a deep, resonant base from which every color must fight its way forward. Working in oil and acrylic, he builds the image layer by layer, using bold primaries and heavy impasto applied with both brush and palette knife. The paint goes on thick — ridged, sculpted, almost architectural — so that the surface of the canvas becomes a landscape of its own, catching light and casting shadow in ways that shift as you move around the room. Sergey's palette radiates — deep cobalt skies, saturated fields of crimson and gold, birch trunks that glow against electric blues. The colors are deliberately unrealistic, pushed past observation into something felt rather than seen. It's a Post-Impressionist vision fired by the spirit of Van Gogh, but rooted in Sergey's own story — a man who grew up inside Soviet realism and painted his way out of it, one vivid, fearless canvas at a time. Anything can set a painting in motion: the quality of afternoon light, a grove of aspens turning gold, the scent of a vineyard, a color glimpsed in passing. Sergey doesn't wait for inspiration so much as stay permanently open to it — and when it arrives, he already has 6:30 AM's sketches waiting.

Sandy Springs Artsapalooza is a popular two-day outdoor arts festival held annually in Sandy Springs, just north of Atlanta. Produced by (AFFPS), the event is part of AFFPS’s long-running mission to bring high-quality visual art into accessible public spaces while supporting working artists. The festival features approximately 100 juried artists and craftspeople from across the Southeast, showcasing original, handmade work in a wide range of media including painting, photography, jewelry, ceramics, sculpture, fiber, glass, metal, and mixed media. All artwork is created and presented by the artists themselves, giving attendees a direct connection to the makers. Artsapalooza is free to attend and designed as a community-friendly event. In addition to artist booths, visitors can enjoy live music, food vendors and food trucks, children’s art activities, and interactive experiences that make the festival welcoming for families and casual art buyers as well as serious collectors. One of the festival’s signature traditions is its massive Easter celebration, where AFFPS distributes more than 10,000 Easter eggs, making it one of the most enthusiastically attended and family-loved arts events in the region. Sandy Springs Artsapalooza has become a signature cultural event for the city, blending fine art, community engagement, and neighborhood vitality—hallmarks of AFFPS-produced festivals across Atlanta.
